The Lot-et-Garonne department is the center of choice for exploring beautiful villages (Bastides) and is a stone's throw from prehistoric sites. Plums and foie gras are regional treats.
The Lot et Garonne together with the departments of Dordogne (Bergerac and Monbazillac wines, truffles, foie gras), Gironde (Bordeaux wines), Pyrénées Atlantiques and Landes (oysters and seafood) make up the Aquitaine region.
Aquitaine has a mild climate. In winter, it doesn't get much colder than 10 degrees. In summer not much warmer than 30° C.
The Lot et Garonne department is sometimes called the vegetable garden of France. Important crops are strawberries (3 appelations), asparagus, tomatoes, nuts (hazel, walnut and chestnut), sunflowers, but world famous are the pruneaux d'Agen.
Livestock consists of the famous Blondes d'Aquitaine, goats (cheese), geese and ducks (foie gras) and ... donkeys. There is plenty of hunting of red deer, wild boar, roe deer, pheasants, woodcock, hares, etc.
The region possesses a well-preserved art historical heritage. Already inhabited by Neanderthals and Cro Magnon man (the “cradle of mankind”), then colonized by the Romans (viticulture), the region was only reclaimed during the Hundred Years War between France and England. In the 13th century, hundreds of fortified villages (bastides) were founded as lines of defense, sometimes by the French and sometimes by the English. Very many of these villages are still authentic with defensive walls, entrance gates and typical street patterns (Monflanquin, Monpazier, Issigeac, Villeréal, Penne d'Agenais, Pujols, ...).
